Summer is here...and things are moving so quickly i thought i'd take stock a little and write something here.......(yeah, i know...it has been a while...) - I guess the big news in bauer world is that the debut ep is coming out in September....we (JUST ABOUT...) met the deadline for the release date (25/09/06)..in true bauer fashion!

The record is sounding FUCKING GREAT....and i'm not JUST SAYING THAT. Everybody that worked on it over the last few months has done a really good job..from Steve Power at Townhouse/TOP in London at the start of the year, through to Nelly Trip *AKA BAUER BASS PLAYING ENGINEER WIZARD* in our own little studio in Bolton. I can't wait for everyone to hear Gone on record. We have been playing it live 2nd at every gig for a good while now....the only way i can find of describing it is........The Smiths playing a classic abba single......whilst on a diet of classic northern soul and........80s synth pop.....ok...sounds weird i know, but you'll understand when you hear it.

Arctic Monkeys bands....

Fucking hell, please please stop...we have the arctic monkeys and they're they're annoying enough...the world doesn't need little man tate, milburn and bromheads wank-it. I wonder if that fat bass player that got sacked will start a band...

Fab Cafe, Manchester - Oh it's ace....i love the people that go in there...a real mixed bunch. I particularly love the 38 year old manc guys that STILL somehow live in 1990 (Madchester) and 1995 (britpop) - kind of a mixture of Cain Dingle and Kev from Shameless. They can dance. It's unpretentious, chilled and plays good music. What more do you need?

Some blonde girl that looks like Debbie Harry circa Blondie in their prime. Pwhoaar.

Culture.....

What culture will young people grow up with? I was born in the early 1980's...and although it was in the middle of Maggies reign and amidst all the miners strikes yadda yadda, i am glad that i grew up surrounded by art and cultural happenings of some substance.

I remember the magic of Italia 90..when Paul Gasciogne became a superstar. It somehow seemed like a magical time. Fast forward to 2006 and football is so commercial and money orientated. My favourite team are owned by a 78 year old millionaire american business man that has just suffered from 2 strokes. England's most successful team are owned by a Russian mafia man whose (business)affairs are about as straight as George Michael.....

Television.....Only fools and Horses was great...and there were a lot of great sitcom and comedy writers. There is probably a new generation of writers coming through now that are massively frustrated. Television is full of cheap trash. Reality television. X factor. Pop idol. Celebrity love island. Big brother. Celebrity big brother. Celebrities farting in a bottle.

I grew up with Madchester, Some really great pop music...through to Britpop....then in around 2000-2001 publications started to focus more on American music. The Strokes. The White Stripes. Now, England has produced perhaps every great band apart from The Beach Boys and REM. Why do we need to look to America? This has culminated in a whole generation of 14-18 year olds catching onto this EMO trend. Now EMO is possibly the most disgraceful genre of music i have ever heard. It is perhaps more aimed at a specific group of people than, say...busted. Or a boyband. Bland music. John Lennon and John Peel must be turning in their graves. These are people that pioneered great music...great British music.

Anyway...i'm such a moaning bastard and i should stop rabbiting on. All i'm trying to say is...i had The Stone Roses (just about..) i had Britpop i had Italia 90, I had Only fools and horses..i had the Royal Variety performance, i had the 1999 European cup final.

What does a 16 year old kid have? Big brother, EMO, Funky House, Pop Idol/X Factor............GORDON BROWN? Even The Arctic Monkeys (the saviours of British rock..i think not..) wore leather jackets on their 1st American tv performance because their record company told them to.

FUCK. There are going to be a lot of boring people around in ten years time.

Mikey Bauer Web Diary # 1

So here we are, already 1/3 into 2006 and what an eventful last few months
it has been........the year began with a busy spurt of gigs, most of them
really well recieved performances in London (especially the one at the
borderline - you'll know if you were there!) plus a particularly memorable
show at the Academy in Manchester. It was really cool to see a whole new set
of faces turning up to see us (myspace whores ahoy!) and even cooler to look
up during Unbreakable to see a load of people mouthing the words!

We have also been doing our fair share of recording both in London
(Townhouse Studio and Battery) with Steve Power at the helm and in our own
little demo studio in Bolton, NellyTreppas towers. I know a lot of you are
itching to hear some new material after the same few tracks being on the
websites for a fair while, and i can't wait for you to all hear the results,
especially the Steve Power tracks....they're sounding awesome and he has
been a real pleasure to work with (along with his trusty surf addict Glasgow
Celtic loving sidekick Dave).

Gone - A lot of you will have heard this live in the past few gigs....sounds
like Abba. Honestly.

Isn't it a perfect world - We've been recording this in Bolton with our
manager Mark Compton producing....we have played it live a few
times...sounds like The Chameleons...if they had a more tuneful singer...

Keep an eye out on here for gig announcements. Would also be ace to have a
bit of a bauer related shindig sometime this summer in the centre of
Manchester...you're all invited of course. Any ideas...anyone?

well, yet another weekend in a recording studio...but this time it was in a new place (for barfly) in Bolton with a new producer dude called Mark....twas an interesting weekend, and really cool to see lots of new ideas and different ways of doing things in the studio....the best bit was when Lee drummer person was recording EGGS. Yes, that's right, lee RECORDED eggs...and i even have photographic evidence of it. Eggs sound ace. Oh yes.

I always find this time of the year really sad.....when people go off to uni...either freshers or people going back :( - it has been such an ace summer and i can't believe how quickly it has gone...definitely one of the best ever, so many ace times and it's always sad to see groups of friends being split up all over the place, oh the woe........the thing that scares me about people going away to uni is that it never seems quite the same afterwards when they come back.....friendships remain, but haircuts and ESPECIALLY FUCKING ACCENTS change. I've noticed a lot of students tend to come back with this really awful middle class bland accent.......i could never do that......gotta remain true to yourself "innit". If your friend comes back next summer and starts saying stuff like "yeaaaaaah maaaaaaaan it was like sooooooo amaaaaaaaazing and stuff, it was reeeeeeallly reaaaallly gooooood and the new bloc party single is amaaaaaaaazing...."....then be very, very scared!!!!!

Anyway, good luck to everybody that has gone away for a while, hope everything goes well for you all....never forget where you came from..........but as one very clever monkey once said "It's not where you're from, it's where you're at".

P-U-R-E-S-S-E-N-C-E

A lot of people who know me well will have noticed that Puressence is a band that i've been banging on about for a few years now...........i keep making people buy their albums! well here goes....here's my usual bunf about them......

Puressence are a band with a real god given talent...one of the best lead singers i've ever heard. If you go to see them live, he can sometimes be astounding, spine tingling and it can effect every nerve in your body. It really is a god given talent...it is maybe less evident on CD than when you see the band live, but you can still hear the strength and total passion and conviction in his voice and lyrics on each album...i sometimes think it can be a real emotional experience being the lead singer and lyricist in a band that writes such personal lyrics with dynamic music to go with it....having to bare your soul in front of 500 people in a room through a loud p.a music must be a real mentally drainging experience.....

On my travels i have bumped into people from this band from time to time....barfly have supported them twice at a couple of gigs, but i have always kept my distance from them.....it's kind of a weird thing, but i don't want to spoil the music by getting to know the people that made it....it tends to spoil the listening experience sometimes....you may say....BUT WHO THE FUCK ARE THEY? THEY'RE NOT EVEN FAMOUS!....that doesn't matter to be honest. I always say you should love the art, not the artist.....

It is quite fruatrating in a way for this band though......they really do have the ability to touch millions of people with their music, but have never got the break that they deserve...don't get me wrong, they get good crowds in Manchester....(regularly fill big venues like the Academy..) and they`re massive in greece (people in Greece love moody passionate music, stuff like Pink Floyd and Joy Division....).....but they really do deserve to have widespread success.

I've been moaning a bit recently about new fly by night bands like The Arctic Monkeys and Nine Black alps....bands that just come along, supported by the NME with a load of hype...but are all image over substance. I mean, fair enough, bands like Arctic Monkeys probably have a couple of catchy tunes that sound good when you're pissed up in 42s or 5th ave dancing to The Libertines....but it's kind of an insult when bands like this come along and get the success straight away that musically superior bands who have worked their arses off for years deserve much more. It's also fairly frustrating seeing this when i'm in a band myself.....me and my guys really do strive to music as good as bands like puressence....and there is no quick fix for bands that are all about the music over image and hype.......you just have to keep writing those songs and beleiving in yourself......bands like Elbow and Doves have proven it can be done without prostituting the most important thing, which is the music....because, afterall in 100 years people will be listening to Doves albums and not looking at pictures of them. Can`t see that happening with the Arctic fucking Monkeys....

Ok....i'm back from Leeds festival....twas an eventful one. Moi and Superjohnny 'avin it large in Costa Del Leeds...(the site was actually closer to York than Leeds hmm...)

WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY - Got drunk.

Friday

The Modern - saw them in the dance tent...they were actually soundchecking and everybody in the tent thought they were actually playing their set...they got a big round of applause but then had to explain that they were only soundchecking....

Circlesound - Saw a bit of unsigned band Circlesound...sounded ok, little bit cheesy in parts, but all good musicians etc etc... The bass player thought he was a member of Kasabian.

Boy Kill Boy - saw a bit of them but can`t really remember what they sounded like!

Towers of London - ditto...although i do remember the blonde haired singer...

Young Offenders institute - Very bad musically, but extremely funny. Basically a band full of Manc chavs in all the townie gear singing "skin up for the acid man..."

Iggy Pop and the Stooges - Went to see him for a few songs because he's a bit of a legend...mainly so i can just say that i've seen him play live. Caught about 3 or 4 songs....the highlight was him on all fours barking like a dog......that guy has a VERY weird body maaaaaaaaaaaaaan.

The Rakes - saw them but they didn`t have their singer with them...so they brought on a couple of bloc party people...people were going mental about that but i'm not really arsed about them...

Engineers - Fucking fantastic...played 3 songs, each about 15 minutes each. They look really bad...must all be about 37...no image whatsoever...just relied on their music entirely and they sounded ace.

Comedy Tent - STRIPPERS - Mr Superjohnny got all excited and ran to the comedy tent where lots of strippers were performing as warm up for Dirty Sanchez....superjohnny was the token "PERVERT" in the tent...he must have taken about 100 pictures...

Echo and the Bunnymen - Fucking brilliant, played 1 new song and all the rest was the classics...the cutter, nothing ever lasts forever,The Killing Moon etc........Possibly the highlight of the festival. Ian Mcculloch is still cool as fuck, with his long over coat, permanent cigarette in the gob, Shades and *fantastic* hair.

Dirty Sanchez - Caught the end of Dirty Sanchez....they were pouring pints of beer into a guys arse through a tube...and then he squirted the beer out of his bum into another guys face. Extremely entertaining :S

SATURDAY

Spent a lot of today at the mainstage.....

Do me bad things - totally shite. A bit like the Darkness but worse.

Goldie Lookin' Chain - Fucking hilarious.

The Wedding Present - Bored me to tears....the crowd was very sparse for them aswell....the singer looks a bit like Tony Blackburn. The only bad in the whole weekend that i saw setting up their own equipment!

Dropkick Murphys - Didn`t really watch these properly...sat on the grass relaxing with a beer....it was king of Metal music mixed with Traditional irish instruments...they were american....which confused matters further...

Graham Coxon - Shit. Nice scarf though.

Lemon Jelly Bingo - Bingo in the Comedy tent, presented by Cartoons of John Lennon and Kurt....umm....a bit poo.

Missing Elbow and being gutted -*missed elbow on the mainstage by accident*

The Subways - saw a tiny bit of them from outside of the tent...twas always packed in there.....they were playing "rock 'n' Roll queen" and the singer was putting on his best Liam Gallagher accent.

The Killers - Rather good...it's weird to see how a band that sound like Shed Seven mixed with 80's keyboards and synths have gone so massive though...was bizarre to see thousands of Emo kids singing "indie rock 'n' roll".

Kasabian - Saw a tiny bit of them...but it was just too rammed, so i went into a small tent and watched some crappy unknown grunge band...and did some ballroom dancing with an emo girl.

Sunday

Heard a bit of Editors, not very good live.....

Youth Group - Sounded quite melodic. Nothing special but not bad....

SUNBATHED FOR A BIT

Missed "clor" to sunbathe.watchedThe 747's...bit too Garage rock for me...but sounded ok...bit of reggae stuff in there aswell though :(

Mystery jets - Not too bad...they had a 50 year old Blonde guitarist though...look weird against a band of 25 year olds....

Arctic Monkeys - The worst band of the weekend for me. It was a horrible experience. I had to leave the tent after 1 song. It was full of Libertines fans and NME people that had downloaded Arctic Monkeys songs off the net and learnt all the words, so they can claim to have been "a massive fan" before they have their 1st over hyped top 10 hit......yawn. It's Gay Dad...or the 22 20`s all over again...

Dinasaur Jr -saw these on the mainstage...weren`t very good...wasn't paying too much attention to be honest.

The Charlatans - One of the bands i'd been looking forward to seeing...played the usual greatest hits....always dependable for a good performance....bit sad to see them so low down on the bill now though.....must be gutting for a band that has had so many number 1 albums and hits to see themselves slipping below shit like Razorlight and Kings of leon at festivals....

WENT ON THE BIG WHEEL - mainly to avoid shitty Razorlight. The wheel was scary, shouldn't have gone on it...i totally shit myself...it was run by a bunch of dodgy gypsies and it didn`t seem too safe. WAS CREAKING LIKE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Arcade Fire - One of the surprises of the festival for me...never really bothered to listen to them before...but they sounded really good...i'll have to download some tracks..

Kings of leon - poo

Foo Fighters - Ok in a "middle of the road very professional American Rock band" kind of way. Enjoyed them, but it was a bit like enjoying a nice long shit. Dave Grohl kept saying stuff like "you're so great you guys..." aswell. Fuck off mate.

so, here it goes again...rolling along into the next reality t.v thing...as soon as big brother has finished, here this one comes....yep, i has come common place for *real musicians maaaaaaan* to slag this type of show off...meknows..but it isn't without reason. Let's delve into this a little bit more....the winners of these things..success... - have any of them had any for a lengthly amount of time? Will Young? maybe? - here is a kid that can sing. I don't doubt...probably the only one of the *pop idols* to have a lasting caree...but even that is now waning..........he's hardly an artist is he? i can't see there being a will young greatest hits volume 2 being released in 30 years time anyway. Hearsay? ha. Rik Waller? ha. Gareth Gates? who? Michelle the fat scottish one...haven't seen her for months....er...........DARIUS?? has he been dropped?

Feb is the time of year when record sales are at their lowest.....so what do they do?
They give awards to the albums that have sold the most....franz ferdinand,joss stone,keane(them posh cunts are still fecking following me!) ya daaaaa yaaaaaaaa da ya.

They only actually have the awards so that they can put a sticker on Hopes and fears and perhaps sell another 100,000 copies to the thick people that took 8 months to decide whether they were *allowed* to like it or not. I don't want to attend any awards ever in my life. I'd perhaps rather have my scrotum pickled and sold in the local chip shop.....the ralf little singer from Snow Patrol also lost any indie cred that he ever had when it showed him applauding any fucker that went near the stage. Whenever I talk to a band who are about to sign with a major label, I always end up thinking of them in a particular context. I imagine a trench, about four feet wide and five feet deep, maybe sixty yards long, filled with runny, decaying shit. I imagine these people, some of them good friends, some of them barely acquaintances, at one end of this trench. I also imagine a faceless industry lackey at the other end holding a fountain pen and a contract waiting to be signed. Nobody can see what's printed on the contract. It's too far away, and besides, the shit stench is making everybody's eyes water. The lackey shouts to everybody that the first one to swim the trench gets to sign the contract. Everybody dives in the trench and they struggle furiously to get to the other end. Two people arrive simultaneously and begin wrestling furiously, clawing each other and dunking each other under the shit. Eventually, one of them capitulates, and there's only one contestant left. He reaches for the pen, but the Lackey says "Actually, I think you need a little more development. Swim again, please. Backstroke. And he does of course.

I. A & R Scouts
Every major label involved in the hunt for new bands now has on staff a high-profile point man, an "A & R" rep who can present a comfortable face to any prospective band. The initials stand for "Artist and Repertoire." because historically, the A & R staff would select artists to record music that they had also selected, out of an available pool of each. This is still the case, though not openly.

These guys are universally young [about the same age as the bands being wooed], and nowadays they always have some obvious underground rock credibility flag they can wave. Lyle Preslar, former guitarist for Minor Threat, is one of them. Terry Tolkin, former NY independent booking agent and assistant manager at Touch and Go is one of them. Al Smith, former soundman at CBGB is one of them. Mike Gitter, former editor of XXX fanzine and contributor to Rip, Kerrang and other lowbrow rags is one of them. Many of the annoying turds who used to staff college radio stations are in their ranks as well.

There are several reasons A & R scouts are always young. The explanation usually copped-to is that the scout will be "hip to the current musical "scene." A more important reason is that the bands will intuitively trust someone they think is a peer, and who speaks fondly of the same formative rock and roll experiences. The A & R person is the first person to make contact with the band, and as such is the first person to promise them the moon. Who better to promise them the moon than an idealistic young turk who expects to be calling the shots in a few years, and who has had no previous experience with a big record company. Hell, he's as naive as the band he's duping. When he tells them no one will interfere in their creative process, he probably even believes it.

When he sits down with the band for the first time, over a plate of angel hair pasta, he can tell them with all sincerity that when they sign with company X, they're really signing with him and he's on their side. Remember that great gig I saw you at in '85? Didn't we have a blast.

By now all rock bands are wise enough to be suspicious of music industry scum. There is a pervasive caricature in popular culture of a portly, middle aged ex-hipster talking a mile-a-minute, using outdated jargon and calling everybody "baby." After meeting "their" A & R guy, the band will say to themselves and everyone else, "He's not like a record company guy at all! He's like one of us." And they will be right. That's one of the reasons he was hired.

These A & R guys are not allowed to write contracts. What they do is present the band with a letter of intent, or "deal memo," which loosely states some terms, and affirms that the band will sign with the label once a contract has been agreed on.

The spookiest thing about this harmless sounding little memo, is that it is, for all legal purposes, a binding document. That is, once the band signs it, they are under obligation to conclude a deal with the label. If the label presents them with a contract that the band don't want to sign, all the label has to do is wait. There are a hundred other bands willing to sign the exact same contract, so the label is in a position of strength.

These letters never have any terms of expiration, so the band remain bound by the deal memo until a contract is signed, no matter how long that takes. The band cannot sign to another laborer even put out its own material unless they are released from their agreement, which never happens. Make no mistake about it: once a band has signed a letter of intent, they will either eventually sign a contract that suits the label or they will be destroyed.

One of my favorite bands was held hostage for the better part of two years by a slick young "He's not like a label guy at all," A & R rep, on the basis of such a deal memo. He had failed to come through on any of his promises [something he did with similar effect to another well-known band], and so the band wanted out. Another label expressed interest, but when the A & R man was asked to release the band, he said he would need money or points, or possibly both, before he would consider it.

The new label was afraid the price would be too dear, and they said no thanks. On the cusp of making their signature album, an excellent band, humiliated, broke up from the stress and the many months of inactivity.

II. There's This Band
There's this band. They're pretty ordinary, but they're also pretty good, so they've attracted some attention. They're signed to a moderate-sized "independent" label owned by a distribution company, and they have another two albums owed to the label. They're a little ambitious. They'd like to get signed by a major label so they can have some security you know, get some good equipment, tour in a proper tour bus -- nothing fancy, just a little reward for all the hard work.

To that end, they got a manager. He knows some of the label guys, and he can shop their next project to all the right people. He takes his cut, sure, but it's only 15%, and if he can get them signed then it's money well spent. Anyways, it doesn't cost them anything if it doesn't work. 15% of nothing isn't much!

One day an A & R scout calls them, says he's 'been following them for a while now, and when their manager mentioned them to him, it just "clicked." Would they like to meet with him about the possibility of working out a deal with his label? Wow. Big Break time.

They meet the guy, and y'know what -- he's not what they expected from a label guy. He's young and dresses pretty much like the band does. He knows all their favorite bands. He's like one of them. He tells them he wants to go to bat for them, to try to get them everything they want. He says anything is possible with the right attitude. They conclude the evening by taking home a copy of a deal memo they wrote out and signed on the spot.

The A & R guy was full of great ideas, even talked about using a name producer. Butch Vig is out of the question-he wants 100 g's and three points, but they can get Don Fleming for $30,000 plus three points. Even that's a little steep, so maybe they'll go with that guy who used to be in David Letterman's band. He only wants three points. Or they can have just anybody record it (like Warton Tiers, maybe-- cost you 5 or 7 grand] and have Andy Wallace remix it for 4 grand a track plus 2 points. It was a lot to think about.

Well, they like this guy and they trust him. Besides, they already signed the deal memo. He must have been serious about wanting them to sign. They break the news to their current label, and the label manager says he wants them to succeed, so they have his blessing. He will need to be compensated, of course, for the remaining albums left on their contract, but he'll work it out with the label himself. Sub Pop made millions from selling off Nirvana, and Twin Tone hasn't done bad either: 50 grand for the Babes and 60 grand for the Poster Children-- without having to sell a single additional record. It'll be something modest. The new label doesn't mind, so long as it's recoupable out of royalties. Well, they get the final contract, and it's not quite what they expected. They figure it's better to be safe than sorry and they turn it over to a lawyer--one who says he's experienced in entertainment law and he hammers out a few bugs. They're still not sure about it, but the lawyer says he's seen a lot of contracts, and theirs is pretty good. They'll be great royalty: 13% [less a 1O% packaging deduction]. Wasn't it Buffalo Tom that were only getting 12% less 10? Whatever.

The old label only wants 50 grand, an no points. Hell, Sub Pop got 3 points when they let Nirvana go. They're signed for four years, with options on each year, for a total of over a million dollars! That's a lot of money in any man's English. The first year's advance alone is $250,000. Just think about it, a quarter million, just for being in a rock band!

Their manager thinks it's a great deal, especially the large advance. Besides, he knows a publishing company that will take the band on if they get signed, and even give them an advance of 20 grand, so they'll be making that money too. The manager says publishing is pretty mysterious, and nobody really knows where all the money comes from, but the lawyer can look that contract over too. Hell, it's free money.

Their booking agent is excited about the band signing to a major. He says they can maybe average $1,000 or $2,000 a night from now on. That's enough to justify a five week tour, and with tour support, they can use a proper crew, buy some good equipment and even get a tour bus! Buses are pretty expensive, but if you figure in the price of a hotel room for everybody In the band and crew, they're actually about the same cost. Some bands like Therapy? and Sloan and Stereolab) use buses on their tours even when they're getting paid only a couple hundred bucks a night, and this tour should earn at least a grand or two every night. It'll be worth it. The band will be more comfortable and will play better. The agent says a band on a major label can get a merchandising company to pay them an advance on T-shirt sales! ridiculous! There s a gold mine here! The lawyer Should look over the merchandising contract, just to be safe.

They get drunk at the signing party. Polaroids are taken and everybody looks thrilled. The label picked them up in a limo. They decided to go with the producer who used to be in Letterman's band. He had these technicians come in and tune the drums for them and tweak their amps and guitars. He had a guy bring in a slew of expensive old "vintage" microphones. Boy, were they "warm." He even had a guy come in and check the phase of all the equipment in the control room! Boy, was he professional. He used a bunch of equipment on them and by the end of it, they all agreed that it sounded very "punchy," yet "warm."

All that hard work paid off. With the help of a video, the album went like hotcakes! They sold a quarter million copies!

The next album will be about the same, except that the record company will insist they spend more time and money on it. Since the previous one never "recouped," the band will have no leverage, and will oblige.

The next tour will be about the same, except the merchandising advance will have already been paid, and the band, strangely enough, won't have earned any royalties from their T-shirts yet. Maybe the T-shirt guys have figured out how to count money like record company guys.
